The University of Cincinnati and the College of Law Honor Alum Daniel P. Carmichael as a Distinguished Alumni Awardee

Cincinnati, OH—Daniel P. Carmichael was honored at the University of Cincinnati’s Distinguished Alumni Award Ceremony on Thursday, April 12, 2018. Through the years, Carmichael has achieved notable success for his work in the legal field, federal government relations, and non-profit foundations.

After graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a BS degree in Pharmacy in 1965, three years later he earned his JD from the College of Law. With these degrees as his foundation, Carmichael began his professional career at Eli Lilly and Company, a global pharmaceutical company headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Known for breaking new ground in the pharmaceutical industry, it was one of the first pharmaceutical companies to mass produce the polio vaccine and among the first to produce human insulin. It also is the largest manufacturer of psychiatric medications. For 28 years Carmichael’s work at Eli Lilly focused on food and drug law, product liability, corporate securities and general corporate law, corporate governance and compliance, and environmental law.

In 1980, he was appointed the director of the company’s Washington, D.C. office. There, he was in charge of federal government relations. He was promoted to Executive Director of Corporate Affairs several years later, responsible for media relations and public policy planning. In his later years at the company, Carmichael served as Secretary to the Board of Directors and Deputy General Counsel.

After leaving Eli Lilly, he focused his career on FDA regulatory law at the Indianapolis-office of Faegre Baker Daniels, one of the leading law firms in the city, for many years. He has now retired.

The recipient of numerous awards, Carmichael received an honorary Doctor of Law from the university (2006) and the University of Cincinnati Law Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award (2012).

In addition to his legal practice, Carmichael has served on the boards of numerous organizations. Currently, he serves on the boards of Lilly Endowment, Inc. , the Indianapolis Legal Aid Society, the College’s Board of Visitors, and as an emeriti member of the University of Cincinnati Foundation Board of Trustees. Previously he served on the boards for the Food and Drug Law Institute and the Indiana University Public and Environmental Affairs Council.
