The Weaver Institute of Law & Psychiatry presents: Mental Health and Homelessness from a Systems Perspective | Brown Bag Speaker Series

Professor Steven Howe, Department of Psychology at the University of Cincinnati, will discuss six distinct system changes associated with either the emergence of homelessness as a social issue in the 1970’s or its perpetuation today:

1.         Psychotropic medication and the decline of the institutionalized population
2.         Changes in the doctrine of involuntary psychiatric commitment
3.         The erosion of the single room occupancy housing market
4.         The rise of and adverse reaction to the shelter system
5.         The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act
6.         Current holes in the system of state mental health funding and their interplay with Medicaid policy
