UC Law's Public Interest Program Ranked in Top 10

April 9, 2008
The University of Cincinnati College of Law has been ranked #10 on the Top 50 list of “Where Public Interest Lawyers Go To Law School” in a recent article by The National Jurist magazine. The law school is featured in the article “Debt Salvation” in the magazine’s March 2008 issue; notably, the College of Law is the highest ranked Ohio law school.

According to information provided by the American Bar Association, 11.2% of College of Law students start their legal careers as public interest attorneys; and, an additional 11% go into public service work with local, state and federal agencies.

The College of Law has a strong history of encouraging students to enter the public interest field. Each summer many law students participate in the College’s summer public interest program, working in local, regional, national and international public interest law and government positions. These students are paid a stipend and provide thousands of hours of volunteer legal service at agencies and organizations that otherwise could not afford legal interns. According to College of Law Public Interest Coordinator Sean Rhiney, “In exchange, our students receive practical experience, develop expertise in an area of law they are passionate about, and are encouraged to pursue a public interest law career.”

In addition to public interest law organizations, several recent graduates are in public service with the federal government in the prestigious Presidential Management Fellows’ program.
