The College of Law Welcomes Dean Jesse H. Choper,
Order of the Coif Distinguished Visitor

Cincinnati, OH—The University of Cincinnati College of Law commemorates its 175th anniversary with a visit by Order of the Coif Distinguished Visitor Dean Jesse H. Choper, the Earl Warren Professor of Public Law at Boalt Hall, University of California at Berkley. Professor Choper will visit classes, meet with students, as well as conduct several presentations. On Thursday, November 15, he will address the entire law school community, speaking on “Liberal and Conservative Supreme Court Justices: Evolution to the Roberts Court.” This event will be held at noon in Room 114. Lunch is available for all attendees.

Dean Choper, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, served as law clerk to Chief Justice Earl Warren. At the conclusion of his clerkship, he began his teaching career at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (1957-60) and the University of Minnesota (1961-65), before joining the faculty at Boalt Hall in 1965. He was a visiting professor at Harvard Law School, Fordham Law School, the University of Milan, Free University in Amsterdam, Autonoma University in Barcelona, and the University of New South Wales in Sydney. He also served as Boalt Hall’s dean from 1982 to 1992.

From 1979 to 1998, Dean Choper was one of the three major lecturers at the U.S. Law Week’s Annual Constitutional Law Conference in Washington, D.C. He has also delivered major lectures at the University of Michigan, Cornell, Illinois, and Minnesota. In addition Dean Choper has held leadership positions in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, National Order of the Coif, American Association of Law Schools, and the American Law Institute. In 1998, Dean Choper received the UC Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Rutter Award for Teaching Distinction at Boalt Hall in 2006. The Boalt Hall Alumni Association presented him with a faculty Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

Dean Choper has authored numerous books and articles including Judicial Review and the National Political Process: A Functional Reconsideration of the Role of the Supreme Court, which received the Order of the Coif triennial award in 1982, and Securing Religious Liberty: Principles for Judicial Interpretation of the Religious Clauses. His recent work includes the tenth edition of his casebook on Constitutional Lawand sixth edition of his casebook on Corporations, the second edition of The Supreme Court and Its Justices; and The Political Question Doctrine: Suggested Criteria in the Duke Law Journal (2005).

The Order of the Coif
The national Order of the Coif, an honorary scholastic society which encourages excellence in legal education, sponsored Dean Choper’s visit through its newly inaugurated Distinguished Visitor Program. The UC College of Law is the first law school to host an Order of the Coif Distinguished Visitor.

The University of Cincinnati College of Law
This academic year the law school is celebrating its 175th Anniversary. The fourth-oldest, continuously-operating law school in the nation, the College of Law is succeeded only by Yale, Harvard and Virginia.
