2008 Harold C. Schott Scholarship Award

I am delighted to announce that Barbara Black, Charles Hartsock Professor of Law, is the recipient of the 2008 Harold C. Schott Scholarship Award, which recognizes outstanding research and scholarly achievement by a member of the faculty of the University of Cincinnati College of Law.

Professor Black's scholarly work has been influencing the way academics, judges, lawyers, the SEC, and the investing public view the nation's securities law for thirty years. Just this past year, while the United States Supreme Court was relying upon one of her earlier articles, Professor Black was publishing several new and influential articles, including:

• Should the SEC Be a Collection Agency for Defrauded Investors?, 63 Bus. Law. 317 (2008)
• Twenty Years After Shearson/American Express v. McMahon—Assessing Investors' Remedies Symposium: Introduction Working Toward Fair Treatment for Retail Investors, 76 U. Cin. L. Rev. 375 (2008)
• Are Retail Investors Better Off Today?, 1 Brook. J. Corp. Fin. & Com. L. __ (2008)
• Stoneridge Investment Partners v. Scientific-Atlanta, Inc.: Reliance on Deceptive Conduct and the Future of Securities Fraud Class Actions, 36 Sec. Reg. L.J. __ (2008).

In addition, Professor Black completed another article, When Perception Changes Reality: An Empirical Study of Investors' Views of the Fairness of Securities Arbitration (with Jill Gross), which is based on their study commissioned by the Securities Industry Conference on Arbitration, Perceptions of Fairness of Securities Arbitration: An Empirical Study. the study has sparked a vigorous public debate (in, among other places, Bloomberg News, BNA Securities Daily, Investment News, Securities Aribitration Alert, and the Wall Street Journal) and has drawn reactions from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association and the North American Securities Administrators Association.

Professor Black is a frequent speaker at academic and practitioner conferences on corporate and securities law topics. for example, in the past year she spoke at the following programs:

• AALS Section on Securities Regulation Program, AALS Annual Meeting, Are Retail Investors Better Off Today?
• Association of Corporate Counsel, Ethical Responsibilities of In-house Counsel
• Case Western Reserve University School of Law, Stoneridge Investment Partners v. Scientific-Atalanta, Inc.
• Corporate Women's Scholar Conference, Seattle University School of Law, Should the SEC Be a Collection Agency for Defrauded Investors?
• Public Investors Arbitration Association, Ninth Securities Law Seminar and Sixteenth Annual Meeting

Professor Blac will deliver a public lecture on her innovative scholarship at the University of Cincinnati College of Law during the 2008-09 academic year.
