Glenn M. Weaver, M.D. was a leader in the fields of law and psychiatry for more than fifty years, devoting his talents and energy to promoting a greater understanding of the ways in which his two areas of expertise intersect. It is only appropriate that the College’s Institute of Law and Psychiatry, which was established to encourage cooperative scholarship by health and legal professionals, bear Dr. Weaver's name. Since its inception in 1998, the Weaver Institute has endeavored to further the professional excellence, dedication to community service, and desire to expand the conceptual horizons of law and psychiatry that Dr. Weaver personified in his professional and personal life.

Dr. Weaver's career in general and forensic psychiatry spanned more than half a century. The respect that he enjoyed among his colleagues was evidenced by his lengthy tenure as the Director of the Department of Psychiatry at Cincinnati's Christ Hospital and his testimony as an expert witness in hundreds of trials and legal proceedings throughout the United States. No less important, of course, was the important impact that Dr. Weaver's professional skills as a physician and therapist had on the lives of his patients.

As a humanitarian and community servant, Dr. Weaver took active, leadership roles in dozens of neighborhood and community organizations. His belief that professional recognition and personal achievements are inconsequential if the fruits of those achievements are not employed to enlighten society and improve the human condition motivated Dr. Weaver's community service and were at the core of his vision for the Weaver Institute.

Dr. Weaver became interested in the application of psychiatry to law early in his career. A subspecialist in forensic psychiatry since its development in the 1950s, he was a charter member of the Midwest Chapter of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, and he served as a consultant and special examiner for many local courts and agencies. In 1984, he became one of the first medical professionals to be board certified in forensic psychiatry. Dr. Weaver shared his rich experience and wealth of clinical knowledge with students through his positions as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and an Adjunct Professor of Law and Psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati College of Law.

Decades of law students, perhaps unaware of Dr. Weaver's professional and academic achievements, knew him as a fellow student in one of the many law courses he took to better understand the "legal mind" and the workings of legal institutions. Through the years, Dr. Weaver simultaneously attended to the mental health needs of thousands of individuals while tirelessly pursuing scholarly and personal enlightenment. The Weaver Institute is honored to carry his name, and proudly strives to promote the values and vision that were exemplified in his exceptional life and career.
